1968 when our namesake, four-time Olympic athlete &#8211; Les Mills &#8211; opened his first gym in Auckland, New Zealand. Today, Les Mills is an international group fitness brand, moving millions of people globally through our world-leading group exercise programs.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tFROM NZ TO THE WORLD\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>Les Mills is the undisputed world leader in group fitness. Our international business is overseen from our global headquarters in Auckland, New Zealand with offices in London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Shanghai, Stockholm, Chicago and Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>We create and distribute group fitness classes which are taught in over 18,000 licensed facilities in 105 countries around the world. New versions of the workouts are released every three months. The teams behind each of our <a title=\"group fitness programs\" href=\"\/group-fitness\">group fitness programs<\/a> consist of a Program Director, Creative Director, Group Fitness Director, Program Coach, Scientist and Researchers. The workouts are delivered as live, virtual and immersive classes within clubs, as well as via our direct-to-consumer offering, LES MILLS\u2122 On Demand. The classes are delivered by a growing network of 130,000 licensed instructors, who receive licensed music and standardized exercise choreography, via the world&#8217;s best-filmed fitness content.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tHOW IT WORKS\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>Our teams have developed a formula &#8211; listen to thousands of songs, test a range of choreography, and use the latest scientific insights for optimal results and safety. The music is cut down to 10-15 tracks, the choreography agreed, and then classes are trialed up to 20 times before final sign-off. Top production teams film and edit every release in a range of locations, delivering amazing content for everyone. Every quarter, every class then has an education session written about the key learnings from that program and its specific release. Quarterly workshops are held around the world for instructors to learn the new classes, as well as learning about the latest research and education. Our founder is a four-time Olympian who always sets big goals. Les Mills Snr represented New Zealand in track and field at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, winning a Commonwealth gold medal for discus in 1966. Les Mills Snr started his first gym in Auckland, New Zealand in 1968. Now, fifty years on, LES MILLS\u2122 workouts are loved by millions and available in clubs and gyms all across the planet.<\/p>\n\t<p>After witnessing the aerobics phenomenon in the United States, Phillip Mills and wife Jackie, began developing high-energy aerobics and strength classes.<\/p>\n<p>Fitness is literally in our blood. Les Mills Snr was not the only family member to represent his country in sport. His wife Colleen, daughter Donna and his son Phillip (now our MD) all wore the silver fern as national athletes of New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Phillip joined the business full-time in 1980 and immediately began to create innovative ways to motivate people. Not afraid to take risks, Phillip and his mates from the entertainment business were the first to create group workouts driven by the beat of modern music. Those early aerobic programs drew queues down the street and Phillip could sense the real power of group fitness.<\/p>\n<p>In 1990 we changed the game by adding barbells to the studio with the original PUMP class. Massively popular in Australia and New Zealand, we knew it was a winning formula.
